Biography:
Eugène Brands (January 15, 1913 – January 15, 2002, in Amsterdam) was a Dutch painter and one of the first members of the avant-garde art movement COBRA. In 1946, Eugène Brands participated in the group exhibition "Young Painters" at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, where an entire room was dedicated to his work. In 1948, he joined the Experimental Group Holland, and in November 1949, he exhibited his artworks at the "International Exhibition of Experimental Art." Meanwhile, the Experimental Group was one of the founders of the Cobra movement, and he was one of the artists who contributed to the founding declaration in the art magazine Reflex of the group. However, disagreements and conflicts led to his departure, and he decided to pursue a solo career. In the 1950s, he drew inspiration from children's drawings. Today, his work is regularly displayed at the Museum Jan van der Togt.
